Seigles has been in business since 1881 and has twelve locations in northern Illinois, including lumberyards, showrooms, a truss plant, a wall panel shop, a window division, and a kitchen distribution facility. 750 employees staff this family-owned business. Seigles began their partnership with Enterprise in 1985 and has been using Enterprises Version 2 as their point-of-sale system since it was created. Today, they also have one location running Enterprises 4GL system. Seigles is quick to take advantage of any software from Enterprise that helps them do business better. And, their website is evidence that the company is on the cutting-edge of e-commerce. Doug Jones, Vice President of Operations for Seigles, says, "Weve been using EIS for two years now. We needed to allow all of our locations to access information faster and with little help from the main office. EIS lets them get information themselves quickly via the network!" Prior to having EIS, when location managers needed information, Jones had to write reports using a standard report writer. He says, "Using EIS for this reporting is much faster and more reliable." Seigles uses EIS for detailed sales analysis. Jones explains, "We can find out which customers arent buying which items, or can find customers who havent bought in awhile. (We say theyve fallen off the turnip wagon!) We can address problems. For example, we can look at customer return trends and recognize that a salesman of ours may be having problems with takeoffs. Evaluating salespeople in relation to their customers is also helpful." Another important function for EIS at Seigles is inventory management. By looking at under-utilized items and overstocks, management is able to monitor inventory levels to the companys best advantage. "EIS gives us the information we need to improve marketing, increase business, reduce costs and increase operational efficiency," Jones says. While Seigles was well-trained when EIS was installed, Jones gives his managers monthly assignments which require the use of EIS. He explains, "The key to success with EIS is to force the managers to get used to it. Once they become comfortable with this tool, they use it endlessly." A recent assignment, for example, was to rank customers by product category and present the report as an Excel spreadsheet - a piece of cake with EIS, but very time-consuming without it! Jones credits Enterprise for continued innovation with this product. He says, "Enterprise has always been open-mined about this product. Theyve reacted to our suggestions and they understand our business." While Seigles has in-house resources to handle support for EIS now, Jones lauds their initial training from Enterprise. "EIS is a great management tool. Seigles loves it. And, our sales team benefits tremendously from it," Jones says.
